Neighborhood Background

Early developers hoped to form Norwood Park into a resort, due to the area woodlands and hills. The subdivision of Norwood Park is curvilinear, rather than following the typical grid pattern. In the 1830s, English farmers settled in the area.

Over the years, German immigrants moved in, along with Poles and Scandinavians. In 1893, Norwood Park was annexed to Chicago. Nine train stops were built to help residents commute into the city, and most homes were built near the railroad. Between 1970 and 2000, the population of Norwood Park began to decline.

Housing types vary between Victorian houses to bungalows, ranches, and condominiums. Retail businesses line the Northwestern Highway, and residents of Norwood Park have easy access to major transportation systems, such as O’Hare Airport and trains. To this day, Norwood Park remains mostly residential in nature.
