"Gulya's" story

from the brink of suicide to daughter of the King

Page summary

Far too many wives are abused across the Muslim world. But God loves each one of them and knows them by name. “Gulya” is one of these women.

As a daughter in a Muslim family, “Gulya” married a man her parents chose for her. That much was expected – but he did not behave as she hoped. He slept with other women and became addicted to alcohol and gambling. He also beat “Gulya” often.

She suffered for many years, believing she was worthless. One night, her husband’s friend assaulted her while her husband just stood at the door. “Gulya” escaped with her children, but even her own father refused to help her.

Alone and homeless, she decided to kill herself. No one wanted her, anyway.

Will “Gulya” follow through with suicide? What other alternatives could she possibly have? Why would anyone want to save her?
